Updated: Jun 5

Yoga. The image of this four-letter word might differ from person to person. While for you, Yoga can be a health science, it might be a way of life for your friend. An avid yogi however, calls Yoga a soulful journey to liberation.

There can be a number of aspects people enjoy Yoga in, but the ultimate goal of Yoga remains the same – a complete fitness of the mind, body, and soul. It is the principle of healthy living from where all the other objectives of a Yoga practitioner are derived.

Health, according to the yogic school of wellness, is a state of complete balance between the mind and bodywith the soul.

Since the genesis of this yogic science in the Vedic period, Yoga and its various practices have served multiple human generations in their quest for a life of wellness.

Today, when life has become a non-stop bullet train with the burden of carrying personal as well as professional responsibilities, Yoga comes as a much-needed recourse. The spiritual discipline has been highly influential in keeping the population away from the reach of diseases and anxieties.

The Yogic Perspective of Wholesome Living

Health, according to the yogic school of wellness, is a state of complete balance between the mind and body with the soul.

Patanjali describes health as a body with a competent mind that is capable enough to take the decisions of the life in an excellent manner without getting exhausted. Yoga Sutras also state the four pillars of a healthy life:

  1. rupa (haleness),

  2. bala (strength),

  3. lavanya (dazzling body), and

  4. vajrasamhanahananatva (endurance).

Meaning thereby, yogic fitness denotes harmony between the functions all the body parts in relation to the environment and emotions.

Pranayama: The Breathing Art

Breath; this is what the life runs on. The yogic philosophy recognizes breathing (life force) as a source of enormous power. With continuous inhalation and exhalation, the body gets pure oxygen, which is an ideal constituent of a healthy life.

Pranayama is defined as a practice of the removal of the impurities present in the blood by making it warm. Furthermore, the breathing Yoga enhances the decision-making power of the brain since the memory box is supplied with fresh air to work at its full potential.

Meditation: The Mindful Practice

After working for hours, the mind gets tired and needs rest. Meditation helps the mind refresh and remain calm. It heals the mind and removes any mental agonies. It reduces stress and promotes inner quiet.

During the practice of Meditation, the mind goes into the state of seclusion where one finds nothing but peace. This peace teaches us to remain composed even during the moments of stiffness.

Yoga trainers across the globe suggest the practice of Meditation in the early morning when the weather is pleasant. Morning Meditation keeps the brain unperturbed for the whole day.

Mantra Chanting

Health is also decided by how positive you are in your life. A pessimist or hopeless person can never achieve the state of complete wellness for they are more likely to be in the depression by looking at the negative side of the coin.

Mantras are a great source of positive attitude in the life. “AUM’ is the origin of all the spiritual knowledge and offers emotional support during tough hours. The Sanskrit Mantras bring one closer to the God who teaches us to fight all kinds of diseases with audacity.

Yoga Asanas: The Physical Exercise

Yoga is adorned with a number of asanas that are meant to keep people fit and healthy. Although, in the western world, many practice the asanas primarily for physical fitness, these are actually related to complete fitness of the mental, as well as emotional, health. The primary motto of the asanas it to make the body strong enough to fight disease-causing agents, and the mind aware to detect flaws in our fitness, if any.

Asanas such as Balasana, Savasana, Viparita Karani, etc., are ideal to bring immense calmness in the mind and keep a check on a headache and anxiety. Trikonasana, Bhujangasana, Dhanurasana, etc., help in building robust muscles.

Various asanas work effectively in curing numerous diseases such as a backache, diabetes, asthma, etc. When practiced regularly, Yoga poses can be of a great use in helping the body increase vigour and be disorder-free.

Yogic routine: A Balanced Day and Night

After talking about the theoretical knowledge of health and wellness, it is time to implement those practices.

The core of healthy living begins with the idea of waking up early in the morning followed by the practice of Yoga. Ancient yogic texts state that one should have three wholesome meals every day with an interval of approximately 5-6 hours. Without skipping any meal, it is encouraged to have only vegetarian dishes.

The time for going to bed should not be too late, and dinner is advocated to have been done before the sunset. These are some of the guidelines Yogic philosophy prescribes to follow for healthy living.

In the words of Swami Vivekananda,

“Health is wealth Peace of mind is happiness. Yoga shows the way. If we have to prosper in the life, we must embrace the teachings of Yoga and follow its practices.”
